So last night, as my TV is still busted, I spent my time reading. I just finished reading "No Need for Speed: A beginners guide to the Joys of Running" by John Bingham. I had already read his earlier book as well (The courage to Start: A Guide to Running for you Life), and loved it. So suffice it to say, he recommended that I get a little cross training in a few days a week. As I started my fitness program following the Body for Life plan, but had recently started training fully for the 5K in December, I had stopped doing the cross training. I was just running and walking. I realized that I had just stopped a pretty important part of my working out. One that would likely prevent more injuries, as well as give my body enough time to heal itself.
So, this morning, I changed it a bit. I had been wanting to get on the LifeCycle in my fitness center, but was a little nervous at how comfortable I would be, as when I was at 400lbs, sitting on any thing was a risk and a pain often enough. I ended up doing it though. I rode for about 20 minutes, at a pretty low level. Just enough to get my heart rate in the low end of my cardio zone. I was amazed at how fast the mileage added up though. In just that 20 minutes, I rode the equivalent of 7 miles.
Afterwards, I hopped on the treadmill, and did a 20 minute 3MPH walk and a 5 minute cool down, keeping my heart rate up. I then hopped down and sat in the sauna for 15 minutes and headed back home to clean up and get ready for work.
All in all, a great workout.
